Input Devices, Mouse, Keyboard

Input devices allow users to interact with the computer. The keyboard sends text and commands, while the mouse or other pointing device controls the on-screen pointer and interface.

Although they do not usually affect raw computing performance, input devices can make a significant difference to comfort, accessibility, accuracy, and productivity.

Keyboard possibilities

  • Membrane keyboard: Usually affordable, quiet, and suitable for office work and everyday computing.

  • Mechanical keyboard: Uses individual mechanical switches. It offers a wide range of tactile, linear, and clicky typing experiences.

  • Low-profile keyboard: Has a thinner design and shorter key travel.

  • Ergonomic keyboard: Designed to encourage a more comfortable hand and wrist position.

  • Wireless keyboard: Connects using Bluetooth or a dedicated wireless receiver.

  • Compact keyboard: Layouts such as TKL, 75%, and 60% reduce desk space but may omit some keys.

Mouse possibilities

  • Basic optical mouse: An inexpensive option for general computing.

  • Gaming mouse: Often provides adjustable sensitivity, additional buttons, and a high polling rate.

  • Ergonomic mouse: Designed around a particular grip or hand position to improve comfort for some users.

  • Trackball: Moves the pointer using a stationary device and a rotating ball.

  • Vertical mouse: Places the hand in a more upright position.

  • Wireless mouse: Reduces cable clutter and offers greater freedom of movement.

Important characteristics

For keyboards, consider switch type, layout, key spacing, noise, connectivity, and comfort.

For mice, consider shape, hand size, sensor performance, sensitivity (DPI), polling rate, weight, buttons, and wired or wireless connectivity.

Other possible input devices include touchpads, drawing tablets, trackballs, microphones, webcams, game controllers, and specialized accessibility devices.

Recommendation: For office work, prioritize comfort, reliability, and ergonomics. For gaming, choose a mouse and keyboard suited to the games you play and your personal preferences. Expensive peripherals are not automatically more comfortable or more accurate.
